To establish longterm sustainable eHealth Capacity in the areas of education, research and innovation, in order to enhance the effectiveness of healthcare services


Our Story

“The centre was founded in 2012 by Joe Gallagher, Siobhan O’Connor, Hsin-yi Lee, Joseph Wu and John O’Donoghue with direct support from the Malawi Ministry of Health, Mzuzu University and Luke International. The Director of the Centre is Hsin-yi Lee with John O’Donoghue as the International Director.”

Director: Hsin-yi Lee

Hsin-yi Lee is the Country Representative for Luke International (LIN) Malawi Office. She leads the development of health information training courses and the deployment of facility-level electronic medical records systems in rural health facilities. She is also involved in research and development activities, including roles as a volunteer lecturer at the Mzuzu University Biomedical Sciences Department in Epidemiology, supervising student research projects, and overlooking LIN’s international public health and medical student internship program.

Hsin-yi holds a MSPH in Health Education and Health Communication from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and BSc in Public Health from the National Taiwan University. In her previous capacity, she has conducted field research in Uganda, evaluating a SMS behaviour change campaign targeted at pregnant women for malaria prevention and antenatal care attendance.

International director: John o’donoghue

Dr John O'Donoghue is a lecturer in eHealth at University College Cork, Ireland and formally a senior lecturer in eHealth at Imperial College London and Deputy Director of its Global eHealth Unit. He is also the eHealth Principal Investigator within the Global Health Research Group at University College Dublin. He received his B.Sc. in Computer Science and a research M.Sc. in Real-Time Systems and Simulation from the Department of Mathematics and Computing, Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland and a PhD from the Department of Computer Science at University College Cork, Ireland.

He has published in a number of national\international journals and conference proceedings in the area of eHealth and mHealth for both developed and developing countries. His main research areas include: Pervasive Data Management, Quality of Data, Health Informatics and Medical based Information Systems. For his doctoral research, he received the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Ballou/Pazer DQ/IQ Research Award, which recognises a PhD dissertation that demonstrates a significant contribution to the field of Information Quality (IQ). Dr O’Donoghue is a Fellow of the British Computer Society.
